More Roland V-Synth questions

Hi there. I am testing MIDI Translator Pro and was starting a patch for getting the knobs on the V-Synth to be translated from SYSEX to CC messages. I felt lucky finding that someone may have created a preset for this process a;ready on the READ ONLY forums. However, even after configuring the software to see input and create output from my V-Synth AND using this free patch, I seem to be only gettong SYSEX output into the Bome virtual output port still. I am using a MIDI monitor app outside of MTP to verify what MTP is sending.

The user patch I am using is set to send Raw MIDI and SYSEX out of the patch, so I also tried setting the output to MIDI CC and setting the message to CC 16. The knob is still sending SYSEX. I verified that I am indeed using the correct knob. The Log window in MTP also says that SYSEX is still being sent out when MIDI Out and Outgoing are selcted in the Log Window. I am dreaming of getting the output to be CC messages for use on the Bome Midi input in Ableton Live. Here is the patch I am trying to use/modify with my system. Thanks for any help!!

Well it looks like the another input value is changed in addition to the one we assigned ss. Please assign it as follows (tt)

Actually it looks like input stream number of characters has now changed 14 vs 16 so maybe you need to create a new translator for this

You need to really analyze the input patterns for every setting so that you can set up appropriate translators. In every instance when it was not working, it was because the input pattern changed.

Yes, I am learning that. This process of thinking actually helped get me to thought that the field where ”tt” is now is varying with the previous fields. I’ll get this down a bit as I go. Thanks for the insight and expertise, man.

Ok, tried it! I always have to remamp the Decay control in Midi In to get it to work again. Then I paste in your input string and am able to test the action since the slider is working again with output. Perhaps this is useful info:
This new preset inverts the issue. SYSEX to CC translation happens if the Decay slider is all the way UP now, whereas before the Decay slider needed to be DOWN.

Bingo! This was it ^. I thought that slot change was important and your suggestion to add the ”tt” in that slot seems to have done it! It doesn’t seem to need the extra rule you suggested just now. I’ll keep testing to make sure my celebration is timely haha. Hopefully this is the last piece. So far my MIDI monitor software says it is sending the correct CC message and values. I’ve learned a lot from this. Thanks so much for your skills and guidance! This will help me try to build my own in the future for other hardware and share with the planet πŸ˜€

Ah man, that’s great! It’s beautiful up there! I was working at Mickey Hart’s studio last year and driving through Sebastopol and Forestville every day. I really want a place there now haha. So beautiful. Thanks for the kind words on my site, man. It will get better soon with more updates. I am working on a solo record and will update lots of things there as that goes out. I can’t imagine lugging a B3 around haha. I used to have a C3 at my studio in LA before I moved up here. There’s nothing like a Hammond!

I now have a Hammond SK2. It has emulated leslie instead of real one so not quite as good. Also less drawbars but only 35 lbs so it is certainly more portable. My B3 (1956 made) now resides in a Church in Novato. It was in mint condition when I sold it. It was a real bear to lug around but I had all of the right equipment to make it easier and keep it protected.

G’mahrnin’! I have attached a screenshot to see if this is the format you meant on the rules (and input). I have tried different approaches like putting the new rules text at the VERY beginning of the current rules, before the “Scaling Methodology” line and others, but am getting the same behavior. Perhaps I have the formatting wrong? I’m learning, though!

I have attached the latest text doc you requested. I moved the Attack fader just a hair to verify the bottom values on both Decay range examples and labeled all in the doc. There’s always ONE CONTROL that’s funky right? Geeeez…

As mentioned earlier, the numbers after 1C do change in groups of X messages labeled as 00, 01, 02, 03, 04, 05, 06, 07 (not sure as I didn’t count). Actually, here are the Attack fader values as well. Perhaps you will need them?

Thank you, Steve. I tried 1_03 but get the same behavior. Here is a log of the data being sent by using the Decay fader, then moving the Attack fader a bit, then trying the Decay fader again. These are time stamped as well if that’s useful. You can see the Decay fader go back to only MIDI input as the translation gets shut down. I added the gaps in the doc to make it easier to see the three moves.

Turn off all other translators (uncheck them) and see if you have the same problem. It is possible there is something in another translator interfering. In the meantime, I’ll have a look.

I turned off all other translators and remapped the decay fader to get it to work again. The decay fader works fine. If I move the Attack fader, the decay fader reverts to MIDI In sysex only again. Moving either of the other two faders (Sustain or Release) does not reset that Decay fader with the translators off. It seems like a conflict between the Attack string and the Decay string as they are so similar yeah?

Yup, it seems no other knob or fader resets the Decay fader except the Attack fader. All other knobs and faders seeeeem to being working great without resetting others except the Attack one. That part is good news.

My guess is the value of the number after 1C on decay will vary based on the position of attack.
Try turning attack all the way down then see what decay puts out.
Then turn attack all the way up and see what decay puts out.

A HA! You’re right. With Attack all the way down, the Decay fader works with translation to CC messages. If I then move the Attack fader at all, including all the way up or in between, the decay fader resets to MIDI Into MTP only with no translation. If I move the Attack fader back to the bottom, the Decay fader starts working again I guess the Attack fader’s input messages are changing Decay’s or overlapping in some way?

Yes, it seems the value after 1C is changing based on the Attack parameters position from 00 to 01 to 02, etc. Hmmm. That sounds tricky :-/

Shouldn’t be too bad. As I said move attack all the way down and then record the range on decay.
Move attack all the way up and then record range on decay.

Ah great! You like puzzles as much as I do haha… I have attached a text file that has the MIDI input values sent from the attack, decay, and sustain faders, all from bottom to top of their full travel. All the faders retains their function except the Decay one. It’s weird that once it’s gone, it can’t even be reset to work even when reloading the preset that was saved before the issue. It has to be remapped every time the other faders are used.

P.S. I tried moving the Decay line above the other faders’ translators to no avail. Same issue. I’m not sure if that’s what you meant or how these take priority, but that’s what I did πŸ˜€

My guess is if you are moving the faders too quickly, transmission of some values gets suppressed. You last dump of decay didn’t match this one. I’ll poke at it more later.

Dang it, I found my first bug after testing. It seems that one fader on the V-Synth, Line 21 Decay, gets disabled after using any of the three next to it. When I say disabled, it stops sending MIDI out after using the other faders. I can reamp the MIDI input and that Decay fader works again. I save the preset. Then I use one of the other faders next to it and the Decay fader stops sending MIDI again. I can close the preset and reopen the saved one and still no MIDI output from the Decay fader. Weird right? I do notice that there is another extra byte field on the decay MIDI input string. I am assuming that the rules for all the others may not work for this one since the string is longer and has an extra bit of data. I event tried using β€œpp qq rr ss” in the next to last four bytes to no avail.

Attack and Decay look pretty similar. Decay seems to have some big gaps (not very consistent). I wonder if attack and decay have some interactions on your synth (output of one changes based on setting of the other)? I suggest you move the translator with the longer input up in front of the one with the shorter input.
If you want to dump the output of both decay and attack in a text file and send it to me, I’ll have a look.

Two of the knobs’ CC #’s were the same as the Time Trip XY pad, so I have edited the preset to have different CC’s. It’s best to use the google drive link provided as I will update the file there when I find improvements on the preset. One more thing. I am not able to post this preset or any answers to the thread on the old forum because I am not able to login using my new forums login info nor can I create a new account on the old forum since it is closed. It would be great if this preset were posted on that thread. Currently, people searching “V-Synth” on the new forum or old forum will pull up that old thread and get the old file that is labeled incorrectly and not fully functional. Any ideas?

Yeah, Steve! I just managed to duplicate your working translator 23 and change the both incoming data for the other knobs and faders and outgoing CC #’s and everything on the V-Synth is working as planned! Yeah! As a bonus, I tried to add the Arpeggiator Tempo knob but its scaling is different. It only goes from like 25 to 120. That’s fine for now. I kept it in the doc and disabled in case I or someone else wants to tackle some rules for that knob. I’m stoked this is working! We are going to make a lot of people happy on this I think. Winner! I have attached my edited doc with all knobs and sliders mapped and info corrected in case you want to see it or use it for something. Thanks again, my friend! Can I buy ya lunch via paypal at that same e-mail address or something?

Try this only translator 23 touched. I had logic to scale the input to output but based on your last message, I don’t think it will be needed.

The key logic still in-tact is to convert MSB LSB into a single value

// Capture MSB and shift left into position
pp=pp<<4
// Now OR it with LSB to get output value needed
pp=pp|qq

 

The scaling logic is still there but commented out

OK, sorry. Just give it a try and let me know what you get. Turns out that there were 128 input values so works well with CC output that is the same. So I didn’t have to convert (scale) to a different number of output values.

Okay, Steve! I have attached my latest edited version of this preset below. I will copy and paste the SYSEX messages below that are sent by the last control on the V-Synth, the Release fader. It sends one message for part of the travel of the fader, then switches to a new message a couple more times as the fader moves upward (with different values along the way). I am hoping to have all of these messages somewhat linked into a steady stream of CC values 0-127, all attached to the same CC number, in this case CC83. It is the last translator item on the preset’s list of translators. Maybe you have a good solution? Lunch is on me πŸ˜€

Lines 31-142 are the input values of a single control as you turn it clockwise?

This is a fader. I am moving it from the very bottom slowly to the top. As you can see, part of the movement has been mapped to CC83 but only goes from 0-15 in value on CC#83, then it switches other values in the sysex string which seem to increment in sections of 0-15 or so before changing again

Got it. Could you confirm the value when you move it back all the way to the bottom?

What you have here is 3 bytes that change First byte is most significant, second byte is least significant and third byte is a checksum which we can ignore. I just think there might be one lower value and then we should be all set. If not, no problem I can still set it up. It looks like an input range of 112 (or 113 if you show me a new value). Output range will be 128 (0-127) to make it standard midi CC

Okay, I am working on both updating the user Rookie 1’s labels to the correct CC messages AND trying to see if I can get further. I’m on the same point now that he got stuck with the controls that will transmit CC values from 0-15 then stop or reset to zero. I have two questions:
1. Could I upload the correctly labeled preset I edited of his to you to put on that read-only site? Other users may want the corrected file and may get confused by the incorrect labels on his preset.
2. Any chance we could pick up where he left off and get this thing finished and working with the controls that are left? Some of them I have already knocked out since they were similar to others in his preset. I just changed the data needed to get the desired CC#’s. Others have the “changing data in the middle of a knob twist or fader move” issue where CC values only go from say 0-15.

For item one I think once you are done you put it on the new site and then although you cannot create a new thread on the old site you can put in a response with a link to the new file Regarding Item two, I can assist to a point but if it gets too involved you will need to come to me for paid services or convince Florian Bomers (owner of the SW) to foot the bill for my time. There are ways to mathematically adjust scaling if necessary to get different ranges but it usually comes with some side affects. If you have one that needs to be rescaled, I can show you and you can duplicate the process for others or you can come to me for paid services to do it for you. Ah roger that, Steve! I thought you were part of the Bome crew! My mistake, my friend. I truly appreciate the time already then! Truly. This is really just a bonus workflow thing for me to do and hopefully send for free as a preset to the synth community out there. I imagine people with other synths can reverse engineer some of this preset to get other some other synths working that have similar quirks. I have lots of other controllers and synths I could use for sending CC messages, but the V-Synth sitting in front of me could be quite ergonomic for my workflow haha. Perhaps Florian Bomers may want to explore building some presets for various synths out there the way the MIDI Designer community and others do. It adds real value to their product for people who want to buy the product for the feature that they need but don’t want to go deep into programming.

Well, being a small company, he has to pick and choose carefully his funding. The nice think about Bome is it is indeed a tool to build your own custom solution as opposed to a canned solution that you have to take it or leave it. I’m still around for creating customer solutions for those that don’t want to spend the time and program themselves. Once a base solution is in place for a given usage model, typically the user picks up doing any tweaks. There are so many controllers, synths, applications out there that it would be near impossible to cover everything. I get questions about stuff I never heard of all the time on this board and have to go and research to see how Bome products can be used to add additional value (which it usually does)

Right on, Steve. Well, if your offer is still good to try a solution for one of the controls left that is only converting to CC’s up to a value of say 15 for part of the control’s travel, I’d love to give cloning that approach to other knobs a try, with my own tweaks for each. I could buy ya lunch via Paypal perhaps? I have 9 of the 24 knobs left to tackle and am hoping the rest are the same approach as each other. I could learn how to do this all I’m sure, but I have plenty of other audio priorities to handle. I’d chip in a bit to be able to enjoy the results myself AND share a free solution with the world! I am typing this here instead of e-mailing you in case this info benefits both you and others reading it in the future.

Ahhhh it seems the MIDI thru was blocking the CC’s from being sent. Thanks for that! After I deleted these thru connections, it still did not work, but I reset/rechecked midi ins and outs and it started working. Hooray! It’s weird because I have another copy of that same preset and can’t get that one to work. I’ll try to dig in further and see what’s up with that. It seems several of the labeled CC messages in the downloaded preset are not the ones being sent. I am testing and labeling them now. I have attached the latest preset edited and working somewhat. I need to remap some to different CC #’s and see what it will take to get the rest of the knobs and faders working. Almost there!

OK, yes I noticed the labels did not seem to match the inputs and outputs so looks like you will need to do some tweaking. You will probably need to try various knobs and buttons to capture the required midi sysexe input and then manually change what midi cc output you want in it’s place.

If you don’t want to pass through sysex strings you need to turn off the midi routes. The way your project is set up, anytihng that isn’t handled by a given translator will be passed straight through untouched.

 

See the attached screen shot. Click on each line and hit the delete key

Then with the input you showed me before when you set up that given translator as I described, it should work

Steve, thanks for that. I tried changing the translator input and output strings to those you posted. Using both Bome MTP and another app to monitor what is coming out of the Bome output bus, it seems that MTP is still sending SYSEX on this bus when this knob is turned on the V-Synth. I have attached a screen shot from my MIDI Monitor app on my Mac. Thank you for responding to my lack of knowledge on this and for helping me to learn!

Hi, perhaps I can assist.

I have the project file that was posted on the old forum.

Could Β you let me know the following

  1. What is the input device you configured in the translators?
  2. What is the output device
  3. Could you post a short log file for one translator you are trying. Just use copy and past and describe which translator? Turn on midi in and midi out
  4. If you have modified the original project file, please post.

Looking at the original project file I would remove any existing default routs if there. Let the translators handle the routing. You can always add them back in later if you wish.

Steve, thank you for the speedy reply. MY dream is to get MTP working with the V-synth’s knobs fully and share with both the V-Synth facebook group and a couple of massive synth groups on facebook. I think this would both help V-Synth users get more out of their synth and probably sell a ton of MTP licenses haha. I think it is worth creating for both us, the users, and for Bome.

I am on a Mac and do not use MIDI Yoke, so I disabled that from the original creators config. On input device I have my V-Synth selected and input is received fine. For output I have the Bome MIDI output bus selected (both alias and main port…I have tried one or the other with the same results.) In the translator created by the online user, the output is selecting/sending Raw MIDI/ System Exclusive data. I have left this as is to post the data sent via the log for you. I tried changing it to CC yesterday but get the same SYSEX output instead of CC messages. Ableton does not receive SYSEX so it is registering no MIDI input from the Bome MIDI bus.

Here is the log window data copied with only MIDI In and MIDI Out checked which is what I think you requested. I am testing the translator line ”OSC 1- LFO3 CC85.” I have tried others with the same results.

Based on your log, you will need to change OSC 1- LFO3 CC85 input from:

F0 41 10 00 53 12 10 00 10 26 pp qq F7

to
F0 41 10 00 53 12 10 00 10 3B pp qq F7

If you want the output to be CC85 with a value of PP you will need to change output of that translator from:

B0 11 pp

To
B0 55 pp

Where pp is the desired output value which is the same value as pp on input. Not sure if this translation is right output but you should then see that translator do a conversion.
