Pitch control scaling on a DDJSP1 & Rekordbox

Hi,

Ive downloaded a trial of the Midi Translator and studied the tutorial video about scaling.

I mapped the midi control in the program but i can get it to work. I want the scaling to go smaller ,

but i dont understand what i need to write in the rules. try’d to copy the rules from the file on youtube

but nothing changes.

alsow if i use the file from youtube and change only the midi in and out, it dont work.

Can somebody help me with this?

Try this.

Since your controller is not properly incrementing by one (it is incrementing by 16),  I shift the input 4 bits to the right. Therefore instead of a input range of 16384 the input range is 1024.  I then scale that down to 127 (0-127) on the output. You don’t get the same level of precision but at least it will scale across the whole range of your malfunctioning knob (0-1023).   There is not a whole lot more we can do since your knob doesn’t appear to be producing the proper output.  Maybe there is another knob on your controller that adjusts the precision of this knob. IE maybe the knob is not malfunctioning but there is another knob designed to alter the behavior of the knob you are using.

The rules are

 

pp=pp>>4
pp=pp*128
pp=pp/1024

okay i got it working. try’d a different way, and seems to work.
only thing is that the knob stops working on half the space.

Let me think on this one. The key reason of the problem is the knob is not putting out what it should so somehow we will need to figure a way to work around it.

OK, to me it looks like 02 is the Most Significant byte of 14 bit value and 22H (34 Decimal) is the least significant byte.
So the input scale would be 0-16383 or 16384 and the output scale would be 0-127 or 128.

The best way to scale this is just use the MSB and ignore the LSB completely. If you use the combined 14 bit value it would say you set input to any value set pp to value.

Then the rules would be

pp=pp*128
pp=pp/16384

Then the output would be a single controller value of pp

 

You could alternately just shift pp 7 bits right

pp=pp>>7

It should come up with the same value.

I hope this helps.

 

I’ve attached an example, assuming you are looking for a 7 bit controller value on channel 5 CC2 with Rekordbox.

Are you trying to change the pitch? What MIDI message is Rekordbox looking for? Maybe we need to approach this differently. Are you trying to do pitch bend? If so, then the scale of the pitch change is highly dependent on how the synth (or software) is set up?

Normally pitch bend is actually a 14 bit value (not a controller), If I remember it is Ex
MM LL where x is the channel number MM is the MSB and LL is the LSB.

You should be able to look this up at MIDI.org.

Also the range of the bend is set with a PRN MIDI message. Some devices can only bend 3 or 4 semitones. Others can bend up to a Octave (12 semitones) in either direction.

The current file I sent you takes the 14 BIT value CC 2 and 34 and basically scales it down to a 7 bit value on CC2 but I really don’t know what Rekord Box is doing with this message.

The incoming value is set to pp as a 14 bit integer and scaled down to a 7 bit MIDI output MIDI message.

its not a jogwheel and there is no problem with the software not recognizing the controller.
it works 100%. I only want to change the range of the knob i dedicated to the master pitch.
problem now is if i move the knob 1 milimeter it goos from 100bpm to 110bpm, so i need to smooth out
the range of the knob.

OK so now it is really just a math exercise, you can either increase the value of the 128 or decrease the value of the 16384. Take your pick. This will limit the range wheel but increase it’s sensitivity. Right now it is more with playing with it until you get the proper balance of scale and sensitivity.

Very strange, could you post a short view of you log file that shows the MIDI input, rules and MIDI output? I will try and do that same but alas, I don’t have anything with a 14 bit controller so will have to write something that emulates its behavior.

Try sending the output to CC 34 instead of 2 and see if that helps. Maybe RekordBox is looking for it there?
Again not sure how you have Rekordbox configured so not sure what it expecting.

Also, could you tell me what port you are sending the output from MIDI Translator Pro. Is it the same port you are monitoring on Rekordbox. MT Pro needs to be in between your controller and RekordBox. Sorry if this sounds like too basic. When things don’t go as expected many times we have to back up to get re-situated. I’m assuming you have your DDJ-SP1 plugged into USB and the MT Pro is monitoring that and converting the output and sending it to a virtual port and that RekordBox is using that same virtual MIDI port as input as opposed to the external controller. I’m also assuming that RekordBox doesn’t support the controller you have, natively which is why you are using MTPro (to convert to a supported controller recognized and supported by RekordBox.

changing cc to 34 diddnt affect anything. And yes i use the vurtial port out to send it to Rekordbox.
The controller works perfect with Rekordbox and all functions are mapped and working, its a native controller for Rekordbox. Plug and play. I’m trying to use MT pro for a knob ive mapped to the Master Pitch in Rekordbox, i want to make the sentitivity of the knob wider because when i turn the knob the BPM jumps to much. I need it to be more smooth.

OK, lets see if we can set it to maximum sensitivity.

Take the value of pp coming in and apply these rules instead of the existing ones. We will be taking the LSB (least significant byte) value of the 14 bit input and applying it to the output

pp=pp&127

Then apply pp to output of controller 2.

With that said, if you still don’t get precision you need, there may be an issue with what the controller is sending as well as from the log file it looks like it may jump in values of 10-20 instead of or 2. If this is the case, also add the following rule below the one above to see if we can fake more precision:

pp=pp/10

With the above we are taking the input MSB only and then dividing the value by 10 to try and achieve smaller jumps.

I find it odd that a small move of the wheel jumps 10-20 in value. Maybe there is some sort of sensitivity adjustment on the controller your are using itself?

After making the changes, perhaps a new snapshot of outgoing MIDI messages log would help more.

You might want to divide by 16 instead of 10. Also, it is becoming more clear to me that your DDJ-SP1 is not putting out the correct MIDI which looks like the crux of the problem. You might look into doing a firmware update to see if this corrects the issue.

Also maybe try mapping to a different knob instead or FX1-1 to see if all controller exhibit the same behavior as far as jumping 16 values at a time. Maybe if you map this to another knob that actually behaves correctly on your controller, it will work.

Well there’s no jogwheel on the controller. I play with 2 turntables and the controller is only for the hotques and some other functions.

That really nice! Thanks!.

I try to explain what i want:

Ive mapped the Master pitch of Rekordbox Dj Software to a knob on a pioneer controller.

Problem is that if i turn the knob the pitch moves to fast, so i need to change the range so i can do a smoother

tempo change.

If i look at capture midi, there’s always 2 cc: cc#02 & cc#34. i dont really understand why that is?

OK, let me ask you to do this. Open your project and enable the log file. check the MIDI In box of the logging function. Move your Jog wheel to the right, copy and pasted portion Then move the jog wheel to the left and copy and paste that portion. Send me what you copied and maybe I can figure it out from there. Also, tell what you have selected as an input device type on your software so I can figure out what it might be expecting.

Hi Michel,

If you post your project file and tell me what input you are using and what you want as the resulting output, I should be able to help you.  The more you can tell me about what you are trying to do, the better.  Make and model of your controller,  MIDI Message it sends Min and Max values and what you want the resulting message to look like.
