Peavey Vypyr - MIDI

Hi,

I've recently been playing around with a Peavey Vypyr VIP-1 amplifier and discovered it was USB MIDI enabled. My plan is to use my existing BomeBox with an FCB1010 to control it so that I don't need to buy a Peavey Sanpera foot controller.

Apparently the Sanpera foot controller is also MIDI and can connect to the VIP-1 via a non-standard 8-pin cable. It appears also that I might be able to make a 5-pin MIDI to 8-pin conversion cable to hook the FCB-1010 directly up to the VIP-1. I've looked at the schematic and it appears that if we use only 3 pins on the cable, we will have a standard MIDI interface. If anyone is interested in this as a solution, let me know by dropping me an email. In the meantime, I will just pursue the USB based solution. I'll be happy to share my project file once I get it done. If anyone else has also done the cable solution before, I would be interested in seeing the results. I did a google search but couldn't find anything.

Here is what I have so far. Most of it I got from actual turning of encoders or buttons of the device while MIDI logging was on.

If using this, you will probably need to use a different incoming message and move the current incoming message to the outgoing message and then use what your controller you are using for the actual incoming message.

For Preset (From Docs). I found this stuff on the Peavey Forum and was able to test it.

The final one (Sysex) is what the device responds to for a generaly MIDI Sysex Enquiry message.

I just built a 5pin MIDI to 8 pin cable and it works with my Roland FC-300 so it should also work with an FCB-1010.

I bought an 8-pin DIN connector for about $2 and cut a standard MIDI cable in half.

I connected up pins 4 and 5 of the 5 pin male DIN connector (FC-300 side) to pins 4 and 5 of the 8 pin male DIN connector (VYPR) and it works like a charm!

Just a bit of clipping and soldering and I’m all set with my custom cable (5 pin DIN to 8 pin DIN). All other wires I just clipped so only the 2 wires were needed to be soldered.

stevec,
Not sure if you’ll see this after this amount of time.
I don’t have any bome products, but ran across your efforts on this forum nonetheless.
I have a Peavey Vyper VIP 2 amplifier and a Sanpera 2 footswitch controller - the one with a volume and expression pedal on it. The expression pedal/wah stopped working recently and despite all my efforts I haven’t been able to get it working. I’m a frequent wah user so this was disappointing.

As the Sanpera II footswitch controller is pretty expensive and proprietary, and I use digital amps a lot, I decided my money would be better spent on the Behringer FCB-1010 and using that to control amp sims and effects in place of the Sanpera II and the Vyper’s built in effects. After doing some research it seems like it might be possible to use my FCB-1010 to control at least some things on the Vyper VIP 2 though? So here are my questions if you ever see these and have any answers:

I’m not sure if the ‘proprietary’ stuff with the Peavey Vyper amp & Sanpera II have to do with non-standard MIDI CC codes (I’m not well versed in MIDI stuff yet) or with non-standard wiring of the MIDI ports, or both. i.e Is the MIDI cable that comes with the Sanpera II a non-standard MIDI cable that’s wired differently, or just a standard MIDI cable over which they’re sending non-standard MIDI CC codes?

If I want to use my FCB-1010 to control my Peavey Vyper VIP 2 instead of my not-completely-functional Sanpera II footswitches (at least for the expression pedals) would I use a standard MIDI cable, or the cable that came with the Sanpera II? I know the Sanpera II gets power through its cable and the last thing I want to do is fry my new FCB-1010 footswitch controller. Or would I need a custom cable that ‘re-maps’ the pinouts or something?

I don’t have any of the after-market EPROM firmware chips installed in my FCB-1010 btw. Is something like the UNO eprom necessary for what I’m wanting to do?

FWIW, I have a MIDI-to-USB interface cable I use to control various amp/effect sims in my DAW and that is working fine without one of the chips excepting the LED lights don’t behave like one would normally want for controlling vst stompboxes. Despite the LED lights not clicking on and off as an indicator of on/off state for a given effect, they still perform that functionality.

Thanks for any insight you might have.

Hi,

Welcome to the Bome Forum!

Once you get the cable wired up, it is pretty easy but you will probably need to run your FCB-1010 through Bome Software as the Vypyr is pretty specific to the MIDI messages it needs. If you look at the project file above, it should show what is being sent with each pedal. If the FCB-1010 supports that MIDI message natively then you are all set, otherwise, best to use Bome MIDI Translator.
For the FC300, I put it in SysEX mode and then used MT Pro to translate the SysEX messages to what the Peavey needed.

I think it is CC6 on MIDI CH 1 for the Wah but you have to enable it first.

Turning the Wah on is CC 5 on MIDI CH 1 with value of 127
Turning the Wah off is CC 5 on MIDI CH 1 with value of 0

So if this is all you need, then I think a stock FCB-1010 could handle it. (Can’t remember if it supports toggle with the stock chip. If not Uno chip would handle it).
