Keystroke emulation problem with “ALT” and windows key in pro tools windows 10

Hi guys, I saw a post about this from way back in 2014 but I don’t think it was ever solved.  I installed the TouchOSC app on my android tab and used midi translator classic to create a bunch of shortcut keys for pro tools. Everything worked fine except shortcut keys with “Alt” and “Start”.  So I installed the demo pro version thinking I would just buy it if it worked in the pro version, but it didn’t still. It’s like midi translator isn’t recognizing that the ALT key or the START key. Is this a windows 10 problem? Or a pro tools problem? I’m using version 12 and really confused as to what could be causing this.

Hi, I’m familiar with the Windows “Alt” key but what is the “Start” key? Do you mean the “Win” Key?
Do these keys work with any other application or is it just a problem with Pro Tools? Or do you know?
Could you show me a few examples of key combinations that don’t seem to work?

Actually I did mean the “win” key. Thanks for the correction. I’m not quite sure if these keys work in other applications, I would have to map a few to figure it out. Examples of shortcut keys that work in pro tools are:

New Session – Ctrl(N)

Open Session Ctrl(O)

Import Session Data – Shift(Alt(I)) ** this doesn’t work. It only reads as SHIFT and ALT, which triggers a whole different action in pro tools

This is just one of many examples. Hope it provides a little more insight. Going to try to the keystrokes in another program

Hi,

I’m running on Windows 10. I tested the attached project file with both Bome MIDI Translator Classic and Bome MIDI Translator Pro and both programs properly send out keystrokes.

I tested the output with the following AutoHotKey script since I do not have ProTools installed, so either Protools is bypassing the way MT Pro sends keystrokes (usually happens with some games that access the keyboard directly) , or there is something wrong with the way you set up the program.

Here is the AutoHotkey Script if you want to download AutoHotkey and test it. (AutoHotkey is free)

; – AutoHotKey script to test incoming keystrokes

#Persistent
#InstallMouseHook
#Usehook On
^N:: tooltip Control N Pressed
^O:: tooltip Control O Pressed
+!I:: tooltip Shift Alt I Pressed

You will have to modify the inputs of your project files for the cc#s it puts out and also the input device. I used a MIDI Fighter Twister which was handy and has programmable controls.

Thanks for this Steve. Will give this a whirl. Although the the problem seems to just be with the ALT and WIN keys Everything else works fine. Every other key combo has no problems there. I think somehow, If I execute a keystroke emulation with ALT+C, Pro Tools isn’t seeing a “Press and hold” of the ALT key, more like “press and release” of the ALT key, after which the C key is then entered. It’s all so weird but lemme give this AutoHotKey a shot

You might want to shut down any other application that might be hijacking you keystroke definitions. This is a pretty common occurrence.
